Sunday, October 23, 2011 Future of Star Trek: Virtue
Almost two years have passed since A Vulcan's Love completed its run and quite a few things have changed in that time. Notably this includes the future of the Star Trek stories. Some of you have been wondering about what's going on so I've created this post to answer that.
I've decided to cancel Star Trek: Virtue and subsequently exit the Star Trek universe.
It really wasn't an easy decision to make, and while there are a few reasons behind my actions, I will outline the main ones here.
1: Timescale
Virtue was planned as a five season story, with each season made up of twenty chapters. That's 100 chapters for the whole story, with each chapter to be around 10,000 words. The result? Virtue would've been around a million words.
The problem doesn't lie with the word count. I have no problem writing a million words. Instead the issue links into my next point:
2: Fan fiction
I want to stress that I don't dislike fan fiction, nor do I consider it to be sub-par than original works. (My online writing did begin with AVL after all.) I do however feel that it can severely limit someone to what they can write about. This was the major obstacle I faced with Virtue. Having to adhere to the 'rules and guidelines' of someone else's universe has become increasingly difficult and forced me to make changes to the story that I wouldn't have otherwise made.
Star Trek is Star Trek. I can't change that. Neither do I want to. So instead I made the decision to exit the universe, rather than have to write with any constraints beyond my control.
I really do appreciate everyone who's read the Star Trek stories, and those who've stayed with me this whole time. Your support continues to mean a lot. I apologise to anyone who has been awaiting the continuation for the AVL series, but as I mentioned above, there are reasons behind my decision.

I'm sorry that is happening Em.
Ah! That is too bad... I must admit that AVL was what was making me come back from time to time to check on your status. I will definitely continue to follow your work, but it won't be the same... I understand though, about the limitations it brings to the storyline. Also, one can't really make a living out of fan fiction :)
Very sorry to hear that. This series was one of my favorite reads... ever...
